To answer the salary expectations question, research the market rate first, then give a range with your target at the top. Say: 'Based on my research and the scope of this role, I am targeting X to Y : though I am flexible depending on the full compensation package.' Never give a number first.

Before any interview conversation, have a salary range based on actual data : not what you made at your last job or what you wish you made.

Research the role using LinkedIn Salary, Glassdoor, or Bureau of Labor Statistics data for your industry. Without that research, any number you give is a guess. With it, you are anchoring to reality.

If They Push You to Give One Number
Give the top of your range. Not the middle. Not the bottom.
The single number question is almost always a negotiating move. When you give the top of your range as your single number, you are protecting the floor of what you actually need.
