The Ending Is Part of the Interview
Most candidates pour all their energy into answering questions and then practically sprint out the door. The closing moments — the last few minutes — are still part of the impression you're leaving. Use them intentionally.
Ask One Final Genuine Question
Before you wrap up, ask one question that shows you've been engaged in the whole conversation. Reference something that came up earlier. 'You mentioned the team is going through a transition right now — what does success look like for this role in supporting that?' It signals you were listening and thinking the whole time.
Express Your Interest Clearly
If you want the role, say so. Not desperately — confidently. 'I really enjoyed this conversation. The more I hear about the work, the more excited I am about the opportunity. I'd love to talk further.' Clear, warm, real. Most candidates don't say this. The ones who do stand out.
Confirm Next Steps Before You Leave
Ask what the process looks like from here and when you can expect to hear back. This isn't aggressive — it's professional. It tells them you're organized and that you value your own time as much as theirs.
